3 Simple Dog Tricks
When setting out on a mission to teach your dog tricks, make sure to have a bag of his favorite treats on hand. Furthermore, a quiet place with no distractions will be a big help. Make sure the training sessions are kept short (10 to 15 min). Make them exciting and fun for each of you. After performing a trick triumphantly, give lots of praise and affection.
Give me your paw. First make your dog sit. As you say give me your paw, grab your dogs paw into your hand. Pet him and reward him with a treat. Repeat this process a few times. After each time wait a little longer to grab your dog's paw. At this point your dog should be giving you his paw as soon as you say "paw". Dogs pick this up rather quickly. After a few sessions he should have it down pat.
The high five. Like many dog tricks the high five is a succession of a trick learned earlier(such as the paw trick). Grasp a dog treat in your hand and slowly raise you hand somewhat higher than in the give me your paw trick. Your dog will respond in the same manner as with the paw trick. When he reaches out with his paw say "high five" then give him a treat and a pat on the head. After mastering the give me your paw trick, this one will be a breeze for him to learn. After several times your dog will high five you with just a hand movement rather than using a treat and your voice.
Training your dog to jump through a hoop. When you start training your dog to do this one, be careful not to hold the hoop too high (about 6" ) so your dog doesn't injure himself. Here we go...Face your dog, with the hoop above the ground in front of him--while he is in the seated position. Next, get your dog's attention while holding a treat with the other hand (your dog should be seated at this point in the process.) Once you are in position, give your dog the "o.k." to pursue the treat. Initially he will most likely try to go around or under the hoola hoop. If he does, start again. Do not give him the treat. The dog really wants his treat so he will figure out that going through the hoop is the only way to get it. When he does go through the hoop, say "HOOP.After several training periods your dog will be performing these tricks simply by verbal command. Enjoy!
