Running for All Around Fitness

The best forms of exercise are those that provide functional strength and endurance.  Specialized programs can be used to train for more specific activities, but nothing beats the basics in terms of health benefits and practicality.  Running is one of mankind's most fundamental activities.  In more primitive times, man used the ability to hunt food and escape from predators.  These days we still use it to escape from danger, whether the danger is in the form of a predator or one of the other dangers created by modern man.  One's ability to run is not only an exercise to burn calories and get in shape; it's a skill that can save one's life.

Before You Start:
Running is a high impact activity that places stress on the bones and connective tissue as well as the heart and lungs.   There are things that can be done to minimize the wear and tear caused by running, but the best way is the implement a program that promotes a gradual toughening of the body.  People who are very overweight are more likely to sustain injuries while running.  For these people, a walking program is recommended until they have dropped some pounds and toughened their bodies.  Then, a slow progression into a running program can proceed.  As always, a quick visit to the doctor is a good idea if you have gone without regular strenuous exercise for a while.

Distance for Cardiovascular Fitness and Weight Loss:
Most people who run do so for the cardiovascular and calorie burning benefits it offers.  A slow jog that raises the heart rate into the aerobic level, maintained for at least thirty minutes, will improve fitness and help you shed pounds.  As your fitness improves, your pace will need to increase to maintain the benefit.  Some people choose to go longer distances as they improve, but this isn't necessary.   You will continue to improve and burn more and more calories simply by maintaining your level of exertion by covering more distance in the same amount of time.

Sprints for Power and Strength:
Though often ignored by runners, sprints are one of the best exercises in existence.  Sprints force your body into the anaerobic range and train your heart and lungs to work more efficiently.  Speed depends on muscle strength so it stands to reason that sprint training will build muscle, especially in the thighs and glutes. Sprints also put less repetitive strain on your bones and joints than distance running does.   A good sprint program consists of numerous repetitions of short distances with very little rest in between.  As your fitness rapidly improves, add more sprints and decrease the rest time.

Mix It Up:
Once you've been running for a while, it's time to add some variety to your program.  Hills will provide a new challenge to even the most seasoned runner.  Find a good one, sprint to the top, jog back down, and repeat several times.  Your stamina and power will benefit greatly.  Another technique, though strange in appearance, is running backwards.  This strange training method forces you to utilize your muscles in a different way and can help with imbalances in muscle strength caused by normal running.  If it sounds easy, give it a try and see how badly your muscles burn.

Running is so simple yet so effective when it comes to improving overall fitness.  No one needs to run a marathon if they don't want to.  A simple running regimen performed 3 or 4 times a week will benefit you like no other exercise routine around.  And if you ever need to escape from that saber tooth tiger, you'll be ready!

who would win a fight between a Velociraptor a tiger/lion/saber tooth?

Who would win? If you watched jurassic park before, keep in mind that an average Velociraptor is actually half the size of those seen in the movie, so a Velociraptor is actually smaller and lighter than any of those big cats. Who would win in a fight? Who's faster and who's stronger?
and why???????

The cat. What most people forget is that lizards and such are cold-blooded; they have a low energy level, tire rapidly and their synapses to not fire as rapidly (muscle cells and how they use energy, basically).
Size is not the only factor; saber-toothed tigers brought down wooly mammouths.
